First Look at the Latest adidas AE 2 Sample

Anthony Edwards‘ NBA Playoff run ended in the Western Conference Finals, with the Dallas Mavericks sealing their fate in Game 5. Despite the setback, Edwards’ performance throughout the playoffs was spectacular, featuring highlight plays and impressive stats. A major factor in his on-court success was his footwear, specifically his adidas AE 1 and the soon-to-be-released AE 1 Low. Since the debut of his signature model in December 2023, the AE 1 has skyrocketed in popularity, earning a spot as one of the top-performance basketball sneakers.

Initially, adidas planned to launch the second iteration, the AE 2, in December 2024. However, due to the AE 1’s immense success and the addition of more low-top colorways in early 2025, adidas has pushed the AE 2 release to early next year. An early image of an adidas AE 2 sample has surfaced, giving fans a glimpse at the design process of Anthony Edwards’ signature line. While the first early sample gives an exciting preview, it is NOT the final product according to our sources, bbb_ceo on Instagram, and adidas.

The first sample of the adidas AE 2 that appeared showcased a mid-cut silhouette that pushes the envelope regarding design and functionality. The sneaker features an aggressive aesthetic with a prominent TPU panel on the midfoot, adorned with multiple perforations that resemble a grater or an AC duct. This design element adds to the shoe’s futuristic look and enhances breathability. Rubber elements from the outsole extend onto the sidewalls, heel, and toe, providing extra durability and traction—essential for the high-energy plays Edwards is known for. Anthony Edwards’ logo is proudly displayed on the tongue tag, reinforcing the signature touch. Inside, the AE 2 promises comfort and performance with a Boost cushioning setup.

Following this early sample, which has since been scrapped, another version of what is being reported as the AE 2 has appeared. Sole Retriever can confirm that this version is the latest AE 2 sample. The shoe retains the futuristic aesthetic that has taken over adidas Basketball’s design language. A knit base features TPU panels along the toecap and black TPU reinforcements running from the toe to the collar and some on the heel for extra support. Inside, the sneaker uses neoprene and mesh for its tongue and sockliner.

One pair has a faux carbon fiber plate on the heel, similar to the design found on the AE 1, while the other does not have any extra support. This mismatch is likely part of the sampling process to determine which design would be better. Underfoot, the sole unit’s cushioning setup remains a mystery, while the rubber outsole features a grippy traction pattern.

The adidas AE 2 will debut in 2025 through adidas and select retailers online and in-store. Coming in men’s sizing, the retail price is set at $130. Expect an array of colorways on the model, including the already-revealed Impact Orange rendition.
