More colorways of the adidas Japan continue the successful resurgence of a once near-forgotten silhouette. In 2021, as part of the third collection in the ongoing collaborative efforts between adidas and Wales Bonner, the Japan reappeared. While delving into the back catalog and researching archival material for her designs, Grace Wales Bonner (GWB) stumbled across a vintage catalog produced in 1964 and distributed for the Olympic Games held in Tokyo that year. Inside that catalog were images of a training shoe, dubbed the Tokyo 64, and GWB insisted on working with this model. Appreciated upon launch, a short time later, the adidas Originals team decided to bring the model back and include it in their upcoming seasonal offerings. They are now dubbed Japan W for legal and copyright purposes, with the W denoting the adidas WMNS team developed them. This year has already seen two colorways, a hugely popular pair in Off White and Spark Yellow tones, alongside a vibrant Better Scarlet and Off White iteration.
For the two upcoming pairs of the adidas Japan W, The Brand With Three Stripes presents classic and simple palettes. One pair comes in Core Black Cloud White, and the reverse is seen on the other. Leather provides the base for the upper, with nubuck overlays for the unique and recognizable two-tiered toe guard and back heel tab. The Three Stripes branding on the sides is also nubuck. Perforations to the toe area continue around the medial sides and between the stripes. Both lace stays are finished with a metal eyelet at the top. Gold branding on the sides lets you know what these shoes are, while both pairs sit upon cloud white soles with herringbone traction.
The adidas Japan Pack W is set to release on September 1, 2024, through adidas and select retailers in-store and online. Available in women’s sizing, retail is set at $120.
